value studies in watercolor

 value studies; tells you so much!
Before beginning any watercolor the practice of a value study is critical.

Every time, I ask myself, where is that light coming from; what time of day is it?
This method forces you to think in shapes;
training you in the right-brain processes; ideal for painting.

On a personal note, I take my glasses off; studying shape and not that detail nonsense; perfect.

Squinting works too. Try it.

that italian muse: eating spaghetti, whenever.

while in Italy, Willa and friends enjoyed many adventures; good for the soul and to remember;
the adventure continues.

italian notions

evocative notions

I continue to 'tip the scales' today as I investigate design notions:all about Italy.
 Now, I find the computer is a great tool to address the composition, work with value, contrast and edges;

color next; monotypes perhaps;

stay tuned for color.

tipping the scale

The quality of line defines the essence of form. This
line process can be described as either depictive or evocative; representational or abstract.

Depictive lines describe with a diagrammatic or a structural mark.
Evocative lines evoke and carry a calligraphic quality or from the heart with a very expressive mark.

Intention is key.

Awareness, with appropriate means, begets intentions.
I have a conversation with my subject.

It presents to me what it is; I give back and respond with an intentional line.

Expressive Drawing/Design in Landscape will guide you through stimulating exercises, focusing on expressive drawing, a free form, abstract approach that any eager artist can master.
